Types of Televisions – Home Cinema Projectors

If you are looking for something other than a traditional television, you might want to consider buying a home cinema projector. On this page you can find out more about projectors and how they work.

To help you decide whether a projector is the right choice for you, you’ll find more useful information including hints and tips on what to look for when choosing a projector on the following pages:

Projectors - What are Projectors?

Projectors can be used for professional presentational purposes, as an educational tool in the classroom or as part of a home cinema system. They project an image on to a screen or a wall. If you use a projector in conjunction with a surround sound system, your horizons are only as big as your wall!

Projectors - How do Projectors Work?

There are two types of digital projectors that you can buy: LCD and DLP.

LCD Projectors

With an LCD Projector, the light from the lamp is divided into primary colours (red, green and blue) using prisms. The light then passes through three LCD screens, made up of thousands of individually controllable panels that can either block the light, open partially or open fully. Each panel corresponds to a pixel on the projected image, giving each pixel three panels (one from each screen). After passing through the screens, the light is recombined using another prism and then passes through the lens.

DLP Projectors

A DLP projector works in a slightly different way. A single panel of thousands of hinged mirrors is placed in front of the light source. The mirrors are rotated in front of the light source to allow different amounts of light through. Colour is added by the rotating three colour (primary) disc in front of the mirror panel.
