Types of Televisions - Plasma Televisions

Plasma televisions are one of the many different types of television that you can choose from when you are buying a new TV. On this page you can find out more about plasma televisions and how they work.

To help you decide whether a plasma television is the right type of television for you, you’ll find more useful information including hints and tips on what to look for when choosing a plasma television on the following pages:

Plasma Televisions – What are Plasma Televisions?

Plasma televisions are flat screen monitors that use tiny plasma cells – small fields of rare gas – electrically charged to create sharper, more stable images than traditional cathode ray tube (CRT) televisions.

Plasma Televisions – How do Plasma Televisions Work?

Plasma televisions contain thousands of pixels, each consisting of tiny gas filled containers, sandwiched between two electrically charged plates.

The gas inside each container is made up of free flowing ions and electrons. The gas in a plasma television glows when the electric current passes through it, working in the same sort of way as a fluorescent light bulb.

Each pixel has three gas-filled fluorescent lights: red, green and blue. A computer inside the plasma television controls the electrical field that passes through each light, varying the intensities to create the image, processing the broadcast signals it receives hundreds of times per second. The plasma television can produce different combinations of every colour of the spectrum.

There are more pixels on a plasma television screen than a CRT television screen, which results in a noticeably sharper image and more vivid colours. Each pixel combination on a plasma television can reproduce an exact hue, not a quick approximation, with deeper and richer images than traditional televisions.
