To help you decide whether an LCD TV is the right type of television for you, youll find more useful information including hints and tips on what to look for when choosing an LCD television on the following pages:
LCD TV - What are LCD Televisions?
LCD stands for liquid crystal diode and whereas traditional televisions use cathode ray tubes (CRT) to work, LCD televisions use liquid crystal technology.
How do LCD Televisions Work?
LCD TV screens consist of two polarising transparent panels with liquid crystal solution between them and a fluorescent bulb behind the rear pane.
When the backlight shines through the glass, the liquid crystals react. Depending on the strength of the light they will either twist or untwist, blocking the light or allowing it through.
The LCD screen is made up of tiny parts known as pixels. Turning the pixels off blocks the light from coming through, and turning them on allows it to pass through. Its this that results in the display youll see on your LCD television screen.
There are two ways in which the pixels are controlled in LCD televisions. Some cheaper models use whats known as passive matrix. This is cheaper to make as it uses a grid of conductors with pixels at the intersections and light for each pixel is controlled by sending a current through two conductors on the grid.
Other LCD televisions use whats known as active matrix. These are also often called TFT (or Thin Film Technology) sets. These use transistors at each intersection to control the current being passed through the pixels.
Active matrix LCD TVs are more expensive to make (and buy) but they have advantages over passive matrix LCD televisions. In active matrix television sets, the current passing through the pixels can be switched on and off more frequently than in passive matrix LCD televisions and the screen refreshes more often. As a result, active matrix LCD televisions are less prone to the ghosting, blurry images and poor contrast that can sometimes affect passive matrix LCD televisions.
