DLP Televisions - What are DLP Televisions?

DLP stands for Digital Light Processing and is a form of technology used in some projectors and rear projection televisions.

DLP Televisions - How do DLP Televisions Work?

DLP images are created by using microscopic mirrors, about the width of a human hair, laid out on a semiconductor chip known as a Digital Micromirror Device (or DMD). Each DMD mirror represents one pixel of the final picture.

To create a picture, the DMD device tilts more than 1.3 million of these mirrors to either the “on” position which is towards the light source, or the “off” position, which is away from the light source. This creates either light or dark.

From here the light is filtered through a colour wheel which rotates at an incredible 120 times per second to produce the correct hue. This, coupled with the fact that the mirrors can be tilted on/off several thousand times per second, means that the DLP can produce at least 16.7 million colours and 1024 shades of grey, as well as white, in order to create the image.
